Hypdemic Needle Theory (Task 2a)

Developed in the 1930's

It suggests that an intended message is directly received and wholly accepted by the receiver.

The model does suggest a powerful and directed flow of information from the sender to the receiver.

Result - Media could manipulate a passive audience / public. It led to believe this was one of the primary ways media authors shaped audience perception.

Other issues that have been brought up with the hypodermic needle theory is that it ignored peoples free will, ignored peoples personality, Ignores the environment, Suggests that the audience is passive, Lies were told to the people to scare the public.

The Hypodermic Needle theory has lots of disadvantages is that it made the audience believe something that isn't true, its an out doubted theory, limited theory & audience have changed in the years.

World War II propaganda posters are an example of the Hypodermic Needle Theory as they are a very simple way of expressing the audience and now we do not use the Hypodermic Needle theory anymore.

Summary

News UK should use my designs in the magazines as they fit with the newspapers styles and conventions as well this is because they have correct stories that fit with the target audience.

One way that my client could test the effectiveness and appropriateness with the audience is a survey/ questionnaire online that people access and complete as they want. Another way my to test it would be to interview people that have brought it and get them to complete an interview on what they think of the magazine.

Codes and Conventions

Codes and Conventions

Below in the pictures are the codes and the conventions for each of the newspapers (Broadsheet and Tabloid).

The sun being a tabloid makes it very different to the times as the sun has different features or if it has similarities they are 2 very different styles. Like for example both papers have a masthead but they are very different from each other. The sun's masthead has color and the times one is very plain and formal. Each of the newspapers has a photo on the front page but the photos are of 2 very different things, the sun shows a woman that is dressed in a dress ready for a night out meanwhile the times has a very different image is a picture of a woman dressed in a business like way.  Now the differences occur and shows the difference in tabloid to broadsheet, the sun has a "Pug" in this case saying about an Xmas tree. Another feature of the sun is the strapline which is below the headline on the newspaper saying about a family being handed 42K. However the times is completely different is a much more formally laid out newspaper and has a consistent style across the front cover. For example having a crosshead, caption to the picture to tell the reader what the picture is about. The times also has a byline across the bottom of the headline which is also formal as well rather than  the sun's informal strapline.

Magazine Moodbard and Design

The Sun

The suns magazines inside would be very celebrity based and also be very gossipy based that means the moodboard I have created would be fitting well as its hitting the typical conventions of he sun. This can be seen below on the left and below that on the left is my own created copy of the sun magazine that they could include in the magazine. The magazine I have created fits with the sun's current color scheme of red background and white writing also fits with the celebrity gossip.

The Times

The times magazine would be very business related because of the type of newspaper that it is. The times is more likely to feature a article about business over a celebrity, this would bet the other way round. This change is reflected in how my moodboard & magazine front cover are created.
